"Daddy, I Need You"
According to the 2011
US Census Bureau, 24 million children live apart from their biological fathers.
That is 1 in every 3 children in America. Out of this number 64% are African
American, 34% Hispanic and 25% White American.
I will never forget the day that I
witnessed a man in his 40’s crying while pouring out his heart to his aging
father. There he stood, torn between love and hate. Part of him wanted to
embrace while part wanted to lash out with words of hurt and pain. His issues
with his father stemmed back as early as he could remember. The conversation
included a life - long relationship of broken promises. He reminded his father
of the times when he waited for him to pick him up for a weekend visit only to
experience a ‘no show’. He expressed how he often waited for him on the porch
with packed bags in excitement and anticipation of their weekend together only
to be fed a plate of habitual broken promises that had continued even into his
adulthood.
If you are an absent
father, I challenge you to improve in this area. It’s not too late to try. However,
you may need to seek counsel in your approach in this process. Pray and ask God
to give you wisdom. Be prepared, it is possible that you may get some ‘push
back’ from your child or the mother of your child due to trust issues, anger or
other circumstances.
One promise that
remains, we have a Daddy that is always with us. I guarantee, If He is not in
your life, it is not because of him. He is a real Daddy, a protector, a
provider, a healer, a deliverer, a teacher and much more. He says in his word.
“Be strong and
courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for
the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor
forsake you”
Deuteronomy 31:6
